Epsom Derby: Our trip to racing's pinnacle

Updated: Jun 10, 2023

What is the Epsom Derby?

The highlight of the British racing calendar, this is the world's most prestigious race, won nine times by Lester Piggott and twice by our ambassador, Frankie Dettori (on Authorized in 2007 and Golden Horn in 2015). A national celebration, monarchs and the public come together in a celebration of the thoroughbred.

What's the itinerary?

We put you up in hotels surrounding the course, which lies just to the south of central London, and within easy reach of the capital. With transfers to and from the track, you never need worry about parking or public transport.

What happened in 2023's edition?

The 2023 Derby was won by Aidan O'Brien's Auguste Rodin, who bounced back to form from a terrible performance in the 2,000 Guineas. Elsewhere, our ambassador, Frankie Dettori (with John and Thady Gosden) took both Group Ones on Day One: the Oaks (Soul Sister) and the Coronation Cup (Emily Upjohn).

What about the atmosphere on course?

It's champagne and top hats in the Queen Elizabeth II stand. But in the public land in the middle of the course, a fair, open-top buses and sandwiches are the order of the day, as Pimms pop and picnics are put on. With the Dash on Derby Day, and the Coronation Cup alongside the Oaks, there's plenty of top quality action away from the features.
