Breeders Cup: Who to look out for this weekend

Updated: Nov 4, 2023

Friday

On 'Future Stars Friday', it's the juveniles day in the spotlight. Big Evs could set Europe off to a winning start, sent over by Mick Appleby, with Tom Marquand taking the mount at 21:00 UK time. Joining Big Evs, though, in the opening Championship race - the Turf Sprint - Godolphin's Norfolk winning Valiant Force, Queen Mary winning Crimson Advocate (an American hope) and Cherry Blossom for the Ballydoyle camp.

Tamara looks an exciting prospect in the Juvenile Fillies at 21:40 UK time, while in the Fillies Turf at 22:20 UK time, Curragh G3 winner Content takes on Porta Fortuna, who delivered Frankie Dettori a victory at Royal Ascot in June but takes Oisin Murphy aboard today (Murphy was aboard for Porta Fortuna's Cheveley Park success in September). Look out for Locked in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile itself, and for Mountain Bear in the Juvenile Turf at 23:40 UK time.

Saturday

The big day leads up to the Breeders' Cup Classic at 22:40 UK time. The Classic, though, is followed by the Turf Sprint at 23:25 UK time, where (with Bradsell scratched), Europe hopes Live In The Dream will be given a clear run, completing his rags to riches storyline. Could Dubai World Cup winner Ushba Tesoro deliver a Classic win for Japan? Or could our ambassador's second career get underway with victory on Chad Brown's Zandon?

Proceeding the Classic, the Turf at 21:50 is arguably the most exciting contest of the weekend for European visitors. French trained Onesto (an impressive third in the Arc last month) faces up to Derby winning Auguste Rodin and Juddmonte International winning Mostadahf, who has another of our ambassadors (Jim Crowley) back on board after Frankie's one-off step in. Frankie, of course, will be on King Of Steel here, fresh from his magical UK send off a couple of weeks back.

Pretty Mischievous looks promising in the Distaff at 21:10 UK time, and 1,000 Guineas winner Mawj looks set for another US win at 20:30 UK time in the Mile (she took the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland last month). Goodnight Olive will be hard to beat in the Filly & Mare Sprint, while it's Warm Heart who may get the better of Inspiral a race previously, in the Filly & Mare Turf. And could we be in for two heartwarming tales today, as Cody's Wish powers clear in the Dirt Mile? LA is where dreams are made...

For 2024
