Cheltenham Festival: Matt Chapman's Festival memories

Updated: Mar 9, 2023

Unsinkable Boxer in the 1998 Gold Card Handicap Hurdle Final

A.P. McCoy came roaring down the hill, absolutely marching up, having been told by Martin Pipe beforehand "all you have to do is get him round".

Big Strand in the 1997 Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle

Another Martin Pipe horse, in a similar handicap, who beat a racing club horse with Australian jockey Jamie Evans on board. He was in fifteenth place jumping the last hurdle, and got up right on the line.

Vautour in the 2016 Ryanair Chase

A more obvious choice, though you could have picked any of his Cheltenham victories. Vautour was awesome, and should have had his chance in the Gold Cup.

Denman in the 2008 Gold Cup

It was so special when he beat Kauto Star. The tank was brilliant!

Faugheen in the 2015 Champion Hurdle

When he won the Champion Hurdle, it probably wasn't the greatest effort of his career. But he is one of my favourite horses, and seeing him romp up at Cheltenham was a joy. I love Faugheen the machine!

For 2023
