Hotel information
Built in 1906, The Grand was once a palace of business – built in demonstration of the success of the North Eastern Railway Company, one of the wealthiest businesses of the Edwardian era, and serving as its headquarters for more than 80 years.
Now reborn as a hotel, but retaining its original splendour, with its intricate stonework and marble detailing, The Grand, York features beautiful public spaces, extraordinarily spacious rooms, two restaurants and bars, an executive lounge and a spa.
Situated next to the ancient walls that enclose the city centre, and with views of York Minster, the hotel is located at a historical crossroads – the perfect place to explore the city.
The hotel occupies two main wings. In the original building, the imposing Edwardian design means every guest room is supremely generous in size, with tall ceilings, large windows and beautiful architectural quirks such as porthole windows. The 20 suites are even more stately and constitute a veritable home from home. The new wing, opened in 2018, sees heritage meet modern simplicity, like an elegant and contemporary take on a fine country house. Wherever you stay, guests benefit from king-sized beds, Egyptian linen and Molton Brown-stocked bathrooms.
The Rise Restaurant occupies a lively place at the heart of the hotel, offering fine dining with relaxed service in a contemporary designed space that echoes the building’s former railway origins.
