The Kentucky Derby, held annually at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, is one of the most iconic horse races in the world.
Known as “The Run for the Roses,” it features the top three-year-old Thoroughbreds racing over a mile and a quarter in a dazzling display of speed, stamina, and spirit. More than just a race, the Derby is a cultural phenomenon – steeped in tradition, from mint juleps and extravagant hats to the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home.”
Attending the Derby is to witness a uniquely American blend of pageantry, excitement, and history, all in one unforgettable weekend.
Kentucky Oaks
The Run‑for‑the‑Lilies kicks off the weekend with the Longines Kentucky Oaks, a prestigious Grade I race for three‑year‑old fillies offering a rich purse and rich tradition. Held the day before the Derby, Oaks Day is also known for its spirited “Pink Out” celebrations in support of breast cancer awareness, making it both a major racing contest and a vibrant fashion and social event.
Kentucky Derby
The following day sees the running of the Kentucky Derby, often called “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports®” and the first jewel of the Triple Crown. This iconic Grade I 1⅛‑mile race for three‑year‑olds draws elite horses and huge crowds, combining thrilling on‑track drama with deep‑rooted traditions, bold fashion and festive atmosphere at one of the sport’s most historic venues.
Kentucky Derby Dress Code
Derby fashion is all about style and tradition. For women, colourful dresses and bold hats are the norm. For men, seersucker suits, bow ties, and fedoras are popular. Comfort meets Southern charm!
Women typically wear bold, stylish outfits centred around statement hats. Think pastel dresses, peplum styles, and elegant accessories. Comfortable yet chic shoes like wedges or flats are a must, and all accessories should follow.
Men typically wear colourful suits or sports coats, often in bold prints, pastels, or preppy plaids. Pair it with a dress shirt, tie or bowtie, and stylish loafers or dress shoes. A fedora or bowler hat adds a classic Derby touch. The key is polished, springtime flair – don’t be afraid to stand out!
