Hereford racecourse is almost square in shape with a circuit of about a mile-and-a-half. Opened in 1771 the course was greatly modernised in the 1960s, and in 1966 a photo-finish camera was installed. Having failed to obtain a new lease from the Hereford Council, Arena Racing Company ceased operations there in December 2012. Hereford staged its final Thoroughbred race meeting on 16 December 2012 but is still used for Arabian racing. The course was used by the North Herefordshire Hunt for a Point to point in May 2014 and was the venue for 2 point to points in 2015. The course also staged Arabian Horse Racing in 2015. Two point to points will again be staged at the course in 2016, the North Ledbury in April and the North Herefordshire Hunt at the end of May. The course will reopen for National Hunt racing on 6 October 2016, holding a maximum of four fixtures in 2016 with a possible twelve more expected to follow in 2017.
